Dana Barros rattled in a 17-foot jumper with 0.8 seconds left, giving the Boston Celtics a 100-99 victory Saturday at Miami despite a career-high 45 points from the Heat’s Alonzo Mourning.

With 10 seconds remaining, Barros, with Bimbo Coles guarding, worked the shot clock down, drove just inside the three-point circle and shot. The ball went in and out, then caromed off the backboard and back in for the game-winner.

“Right now, any loss is a crushing sort of game,” said Mourning, who also grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked seven shots. “Those points are irrelevant in a loss. We need a win more than I need 45 points.”

Seattle 104, Houston 103--Gary Payton had 32 points and his three-point shot with 7.6 seconds left in overtime sealed the SuperSonics’ victory at Houston.

Seattle trailed by at least 10 for most of the game, but finally took the lead with 3:45 to go in the fourth quarter when Hersey Hawkins--one of six SuperSonics in double figures with 22 points--made two free throws.

Minnesota 105, Dallas 96--Isaiah Rider scored 26 points and Tom Gugliotta pulled down 20 rebounds, matching a franchise record, and contributed 22 points to help the Timberwolves snap a five-game losing streak with a victory at Dallas.

Cleveland 111, Milwaukee 88--Terrell Brandon took a half-day off and still managed to punish the slumping Bucks, scoring his 23 points in only 24 minutes, and helping the Cavaliers to the easy victory at Milwaukee.

Portland 96, Philadelphia 85--James Robinson and Gary Trent came off the bench to score 17 points each as the Trail Blazers outscored Philadelphia’s substitutes, 46-33, and ended a three-game losing streak with the victory at Philadelphia.

Philadelphia closed to 82-75 on a three-point shot by Greg Sutton with 4:24 to play, but Trent made a three-point play and Robinson made a three-point shot to help Portland pull away.

Sacramento 94, Detroit 85--Mitch Richmond scored 11 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter as the Kings got a rare road victory, and won for only the second time in their last 10 games against the Pistons at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Sacramento had lost nine of its last 11 road games.

NBA Notes

NBA Commissioner David Stern, admonishing players opposed to the return of Magic Johnson, said the only way to eliminate their fears would be through widespread testing for the AIDS virus. And that makes no sense, he was quoted as saying in Saturday’s New York Post. “This is not Salem,” Stern told the newspaper. “This is the United States. This is the NBA. We are not going on a witch hunt.” . . . The Golden State Warriors have agreed to play at the Cow Palace in San Francisco next season while the Oakland Coliseum Arena is under construction. The Warriors and Oakland and Alameda County officials have been negotiating a new lease, which includes renovating the Coliseum. . . . The Orlando Magic put forward Jeff Turner (knee) on the injured list and activated center Jon Koncak.
