Magic Reaches a Record Low in Loss to Pistons

The Detroit Piston defense turned in a record fourth quarter, holding the Orlando Magic to a club-low one basket and seven points as the Pistons won, 97-83, Wednesday night at Auburn Hills, Mich.

It was the lowest quarter ever for Orlando, breaking the mark of 10 points. It also was the worst field goal quarter in club history; the previous low was three.

The previous best for Detroit’s defense was a low of eight points, last accomplished in 1992.

The Magic went without a field goal after Shaquille O’Neal’s basket with 11:14 remaining. They shot one for 16 in the quarter.

Allan Houston scored 31 points for the Pistons.

Chicago 99, Golden State 95--The losing streak is over, though the Bulls struggled before winning in Oakland.

Michael Jordan’s 40 points and 11 rebounds rallied the Bulls over the lowly Warriors. Jordan had 15 points in the final period as the Bulls came back from a 15-point third-quarter deficit to break their two-game losing streak.

“I think it was very important to go into the break on a positive note,” Jordan said. “It was important from a confidence and momentum standpoint.”

Scottie Pippen added 15 points for the Bulls, who went on a 27-4 run that began late in the third quarter and lasted until midway through the final period. Chicago now is 42-5.

Utah 102, Vancouver 79--Karl Malone scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek each added 18 points as the Jazz won for the 10th time in the last 12 games at Salt Lake City.

Stockton handed out 11 assists and had four steals, bringing him within seven of Maurice Cheeks’ NBA career record of 2,310.

Philadelphia 102, Indiana 101--Jerry Stackhouse scored 30 points and Derrick Alston added a career-high 24 as the 76ers surprised the Pacers at Philadelphia.

Clarence Weatherspoon had 20 points for Philadelphia, which had lost 11 of its previous 12 games. Mark Jackson had 20 points for the Pacers, who had won nine of their last 10 and had beaten Philadelphia seven consecutive times.

San Antonio 99, Boston 89--Sean Elliott scored a season-high 36 points and David Robinson added 19 points and 19 rebounds at Boston.

Elliott had 17 points and five three-point baskets in the first quarter as the Spurs won for the fifth time in six games. He also had 10 rebounds.

Milwaukee 93, Toronto 88--Sherman Douglas scored 21 points, including two key field goals with less than two minutes remaining at Toronto. It was Mike Dunleavy’s 100th victory as Buck coach.

Terry Cummings had the hot hand coming off the bench for the Bucks, scoring 11 first-half points on five-for-six shooting. He finished with 15 points.

New York 87, Washington 82--Patrick Ewing scored 31 points and reserve Hubert Davis continued his hot shooting as the Knicks won for the sixth time in seven games and defeated Washington at New York for the 11th time in their last 12 meetings. Davis had 18 points.

Miami 101, Atlanta 89--The Heat won consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 3 as Alonzo Mourning scored 36 points at Miami. Rex Chapman and Bimbo Coles added 16 apiece for the Heat, who scored 100 points for the second consecutive game for the first time since Dec. 6.

Portland 103, Minnesota 93--Clifford Robinson scored 32 points and Rod Strickland had 16 points and 16 assists, lifting the Trail Blazers to their third consecutive victory at Minneapolis.

Passed over for the All-Star game even though his 23.5 scoring average entering Wednesday’s game tied him for eighth in the league, Robinson had 26 points in the game’s first 29 minutes.

NBA Notes

Scott Burrell, hampered by injuries throughout his career with the Charlotte Hornets, will sit out the rest of the season after dislocating his right shoulder while reaching over teammate Gerald Glass to deflect a pass in practice. It was the second time in less than six weeks that Burrell injured the shoulder.
