Arizona Slips Past Arizona State, 71-69

Center Ben Davis made two free throws with 26 seconds left, then pulled down a rebound as time ran out to preserve No. 16 Arizona’s 71-69 Pacific 10 Conference victory over Arizona State on Wednesday night at Tempe, Ariz.

Guard Jeremy Veal and forward Ron Riley both missed shots in the final five seconds for Arizona State, 8-10 overall and 3-7 in conference. Riley was the game’s leading scorer with 17 points.

College basketball--Ricky Price sank the three-point basket that sent the Duke-Georgia Tech game into overtime Wednesday night. The player’s name was incorrect in The Times on Thursday.

Davis had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Arizona (17-4, 7-3).

No. 2 Kentucky 120, Vanderbilt 81--Guard Tony Delk scored 22 points to lead seven double-figure scorers in the 18th consecutive victory for the Wildcats (19-1, 9-0) in a Southeastern Conference game at Nashville. The Commodores are 14-8 and 4-5.

No. 3 Kansas 89, No. 21 Iowa State 70--Center Scot Pollard had 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Big Eight Conference-leading Jayhawks (19-1, 7-0) beat the Cyclones (16-5, 5-2) at Lawrence, Kan., for the 14th time in a row.

No. 5 Cincinnati 81, St. Louis 49--The Bearcats (18-1, 7-1) scored their second-biggest victory in 57 games against the Billikens (12-8, 3-6) in a Conference USA game at Cincinnati.

No. 9 Wake Forest 81, Florida State 67--Guard Rusty LaRue made six of seven three-point shots and had a career-high 22 points at Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Atlantic Coast Conference-leading Demon Deacons (15-3, 7-2).

Florida State (10-9, 2-7) was called for 27 fouls, with Wake Forest making 32 of 39 free throws, including a streak of 22. Center Tim Duncan made 15 of 16 free throws as compared to one-of-four shooting from the field.

No. 13 Texas Tech 85, Texas Christian 70--Forward Jason Sasser had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Red Raiders (19-1, 8-0) to their 12th consecutive victory in a Southwest Conference game at Lubbock, Texas. TCU is 11-11 and 2-5.

No. 14 Purdue 74, Wisconsin 42--Reserve guard Todd Foster made five three-point shots during a 25-2 second-half run that proved decisive for the Boilermakers (18-4, 8-2) against the Badgers (13-9, 5-5) in a Big Ten game at Madison, Wis. Foster had 18 points.

No. 18 Syracuse 73, Pittsburgh 67--Forward John Wallace had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Orangemen (17-6, 7-5) to their ninth consecutive Big East victory over the Panthers (9-10, 4-7). Wallace moved past former Pitt standout Charles Smith into 11th place on the Big East’s all-time scoring list.

No. 19 Iowa 88, Northwestern 77--Forward Jess Settles scored a career-high 29 points for the Hawkeyes (16-6, 5-5) at Evanston, Ill. Northwestern is 6-13 and 1-9.

The victory was Coach Tom Davis’ 200th at Iowa.

No. 22 Boston College 89, St. John’s 73--Freshman guard Scoonie Penn scored 20 points and forward Danya Abrams had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Eagles (14-5, 7-4) in a Big East game at New York.

Center Zendon Hamilton had 24 points and 15 rebounds for St. John’s (8-11, 2-9).

No. 24 Eastern Michigan 89, Western Michigan 83--The Eagles (17-2, 10-1) came back from an 11-point deficit midway in the second half at Kalamazoo, Mich., and now have a three-game lead in the Mid-American Conference. Western Michigan is 9-10 and 7-4.

OTHER GAMES

Freshman guard Stephon Marbury’s 12-foot shot in the lane with 42 seconds left in overtime proved decisive for Georgia Tech (14-10, 7-3) in a 73-71 ACC victory over Duke (13-9, 4-6) at Atlanta. Duke guard Chris Collins’ three-point basket with 10 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime. . . . Georgia (13-7, 4-6) made 12 three-point baskets in recording its first SEC road victory, an 85-82 decision over Louisiana State (11-10, 3-6). . . . Missouri (14-8, 4-4) made 40 of 47 free throws in a 99-98 Big Eight home-court victory over Nebraska (15-8, 3-5), which was called for 34 of the game’s 60 fouls. . . . Seton Hall guard Danny Hurley was hospitalized after suffering a concussion in a collision with Rutgers center Andrew Kolbasovsky, who was uninjured and had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Scarlet Knights (6-13, 3-8) to a 70-61 Big East victory over the Pirates (10-10, 6-6) at Piscataway, N.J.
