Accused Carjacker Picks Wrong Target

Some people never have a nice day.

William Michael Lowry, 21, allegedly attempted a carjacking Sunday afternoon in Long Beach, but the driver turned out to be an off-duty Monterey cop who drew his gun.

That was deterrent enough for Lowry who fled--or tried to.

The Costa Mesa resident started waving down one car after another, said the Monterey officer, who used his cellular telephone to call Long Beach police for help.

“The suspect ran out into the street, trying desperately to take somebody’s car,” said police spokeswoman Maria Mendez. “He tried to carjack a total of nine cars, going from one to another. The last one, I guess, didn’t see him.”

Lowry was struck by a car just about the time that Long Beach police officers arrived on the scene.

But order, as in “law and,” was missing from the equation: While police were taking Lowry into custody, a motorcyclist ran into one of the black-and-white units.

Lowry was treated for a concussion and taken into custody. He has been charged with carjacking and is being held on $100,000 bail. The motorcyclist did not suffer serious injuries. Damage to the patrol car is minor.
