Two assistant superintendents and three directors with the Anaheim Union High School District are being considered to replace Cynthia F. Grennan, who retired as superintendent effective last Wednesday.

Trustees will interview the applicants Feb. 22 and possibly announce Grennan’s successor during the regular 7:30 p.m. board meeting that evening.

Candidates in the in-house job search are assistant superintendents Rita S. Newman and F. Jock Fischer, and directors Jan Billings, Craig Haugen and David Steinle. Newman has served as acting superintendent since Grennan’s departure.

“Most of the [candidates] have been with the district for extended periods of time,” trustee L.E. “Slim” Terrell said Monday. “It’s a very diversified group. All of them have a wealth of background.”

Grennan, 57, joined Anaheim Union in 1964 as a social studies instructor. She took the district’s top spot in 1979, becoming Orange County’s first female superintendent. Grennan was chosen by her peers as California’s 1989 Superintendent of the Year.
