Valley College’s “Afternoon College” classes--in which high school seniors can get college credit for classes in computers, business, math and reading--will begin Tuesday.

The program, open to students attending many Valley high schools, offers high school seniors free tuition, school supplies, textbooks, parking, tutoring and campus tours as preparation for academic success in college, said Shannon Stack, Valley College media services director.

Classes in reading/writing skills, algebra review, small group discussion, college/career planning, computer skills, introduction to business and blueprint reading are offered weekdays from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

“The [program] is geared to motivate high school seniors to go on to college by exposing them to the available educational opportunities,” Stack said.

Afternoon College was originally a partnership between Valley College, Cal State Northridge and two Burbank high schools, John Burroughs and Burbank High School. It has expanded to include students at Amelia Earhart, Grant, Robert Lewis, Jack London Monterey, North Hollywood, Francis Polytechnic, Will Rogers, Van Nuys, James Monroe and Birmingham high schools.

To register for any class, seniors at the listed high schools need only show up at the first class meeting at Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys. For information, call (818) 781-1200, Ext. 246.
