Starting pitcher Mike Harkey signed a non-roster contract that will pay him $250,000 if he makes the Dodgers.

“I’m still surprised the Angels didn’t want me back,” said Harkey, who was 4-3 with a 4.55 ERA after being acquired last July by California. “Really, I can’t believe it. They just had no interest in me.

“The way things were going, I was beginning to wonder if this was it. It certainly went through my mind.”

The Dodgers told Harkey they might have a longshot opening for a fifth starter, or as possible long reliever, and Harkey jumped on the opportunity. He took a red-eye flight from Los Angeles, arrived in camp at Vero Beach, Fla., Friday afternoon and insisted on working out.

“I have no idea what happened,” said Harkey, who was signed on the recommendation of Mike Scioscia, Dodger catching instructor. “But I’m comfortable with having to make the team. I’ll do whatever they want.”

Left-handed reliever Scott Radinsky realized the moment he saw his name misspelled on his uniform that he isn’t assured a spot on the roster, but he has made himself known.

Radinsky, who sat out the 1994 season while undergoing chemotherapy treatments for Hodgkin’s disease, appears to have regained his pitching strength.

“The guy looks great,” Manager Tom Lasorda said. “I’ve been very, very impressed.”

Said Radinsky, who underwent chemotherapy twice a week for seven months: “I can feel my strength back. Really, I feel good again.”

Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, said that all unsigned players, including Nomo, will have their contracts renewed March 2 if no agreement is reached. . . . Third baseman Dave Hansen is preparing to also become the Dodgers’ third-string catcher. “I figure it will help my career,” said Hansen, who also brought along a first baseman’s mitt and an outfielder’s glove. . . . The Red Sox are interviewing former Dodger Maury Wills for a position as baserunning coach. . . . Starting pitcher Pedro Astacio reported to camp, and fellow starter Ismael Valdes said that he will be in camp Tuesday after attending his brother’s wedding in Mexico.
