PACOIMA — A 42-year-old Sylmar man died after being hit by a Metrolink train when he tried to dash across the tracks in Pacoima this weekend, police said.
Ira Edward Howard Jr. suffered massive head and internal injuries when the train struck him near the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and San Fernando Road on Friday evening, said Valley Traffic Officer Joseph Gomez.
Howard was taken to Pacifica Hospital of the Valley in Sun Valley, where he died, Gomez said.
Police said the Metrolink train was northbound from Los Angeles’ Union Station to Santa Clarita when the accident occurred. A railroad official said the warning gates had come down but Howard tried to dash across the tracks and was hit.
