Fullerton Slips Past Arizona

Cal State Fullerton broke open a close game with three runs in the sixth inning to defeat Arizona, 9-5, in a nonconference game Saturday night at Titan Field.

Trailing, 4-3, in the fourth inning, Jeremy Giambi hit his first home run of the season with Jack Jones on base to give the Titans the lead.

Jones, who went three for four, singled in C.J. Ankrum in the sixth, followed by a bases-loaded walk to Giambi and a sacrifice fly by Mark Kotsay.

Brent Billingsley improved to 3-0, going 5 2/3 innings. He gave up 10 hits and struck out eight. Scott Hild pitched the final 3 1/3 for the first save of his career.

Giambi was two for three with three runs batted in and Kotsay went two for four with two RBIs.

The Titans have won eight consecutive games and their 8-1 record matches last season’s start.

Arizona’s Matt Hendren (4-0) will oppose Matt Wise (1-0) in today’s finale at 1 p.m.

In other nonconference baseball:

Chapman 6, Concordia 4--Chapman (4-2) scored two runs in the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie against visiting Concordia.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 4-5, Azusa Pacific 5-4 (8)--Shane Sowers had a game-winning RBI double for Southern California College (2-7, 1-1) in the eighth inning of the second game of a doubleheader.

Robert Pegg hit a home run in the first game for the Vanguards.

In nonconference softball:

Long Beach State 2, Cal State Northridge 1--Junior Amy Miner carried a perfect game through 6 2/3 innings before giving up a hit in the seventh inning, but completed a three-hitter with three strikeouts for Long Beach State (3-1).

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Matadors handed the 49ers their first loss of the season, 6-1.

Southern California College 4-3, CS San Bernardino 1-2--Angela Wolf’s infield single scored Shelly Murie, the winning run, in the sixth inning as Southern California College (3-2-1) won the second game of a doubleheader.

Angie Vega had two hits in the Vanguards’ earlier victory.

In Big West Conference tennis:

Pacific 7, UC Irvine 0--Alexis Brown and Mary Moor defeated Pacific’s Kendra Lamb and Kristin Foote, 8-5. Brown and Moor were the only winners on the day for UC Irvine (4-2).

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation:

Stanford 3, UC Irvine 0--Matt Fuerbringer had 16 kills and Brian Moore had 15 kills for Stanford (7-1, 6-1). Chris Harger and John Habben each had 13 kills for UC Irvine (6-7, 2-7).

In GSAC men’s track:

Azusa Pacific 69, Cal Baptist 54, Southern California College 7--David Bolar won the javelin for Southern California Christian (103-1 feet). Bolar also finished fourth in the shot put (34-4).

In GSAC women’s track:

Azusa Pacific 77, Southern California College 29, Cal Baptist 23--Southern California Christians Nikee Pool won the 1,000 meters and qualified for the NAIA Indoor Nationals with a time of 2:58.76.
