Flyers Finally Learn to Beat Devils, 4-1

John LeClair scored his 30th goal and Philadelphia finally beat New Jersey, handing the Devils only their second loss in 12 games, 4-1, Monday at Philadelphia.

The Devils entered the game 3-0 against the Flyers this season after beating them in the Eastern Conference finals last season.

Colorado 7, Edmonton 5--Patrick Roy, 30, became the second-youngest goaltender to reach 300 victories with the help of Peter Forsberg’s second career hat trick at Denver. Forsberg, in his second three-goal effort in four games, added two assists.

Tampa Bay 4, Dallas 2--Daren Puppa returned from a two-game absence for back spasms to stop 29 shots, and Rob Zamuner had a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay.

Detroit 4, Vancouver 3--Sergei Fedorov completed a three-goal flurry midway through the second period to help lead the Red Wings at St. Petersburg, Fla. Fedorov’s goal, his 27th, followed scores by Vladimir Konstantov and Nicklas Lidstrom in a 5:02 span and brought Detroit back from a 3-1 deficit.

New York Ranger goalie Mike Richter apparently suffered an injury typical for players returning from groin problems, although further evaluation of an MRI is needed, according to head physician Dr. Bart Nisonson, who made the initial diagnosis. . . . St. Louis left wing Geoff Courtnall had surgery on his broken left thumb.
