It’s Old Hat for Young, Beating Utah for Fresno

Dominick Young is at it again.

He scored five points in the final minute to enable Fresno State (17-8, 11-4 in the Western Athletic Conference) to upset eighth-ranked Utah, 71-68, Thursday night at Fresno.

That gave the Bulldogs a sweep of the two games against the Utes (21-5, 13-3). Young’s last-second basket beat Utah in the first meeting. This time, he had five three-point baskets and tied Utah’s Keith Van Horn for game-high scoring honors with 17 points.

No. 21 Louisville 72, No. 6 Cincinnati 66--The Cardinals (19-7, 10-2 Conference USA) made 28 of 36 free throws, including five by Tick Rogers in the final minute, to beat the Bearcats (20-3, 9-2) at Cincinnati in a game in which 55 fouls were called.

No. 12 Virginia Tech 61, La Salle 56--The Hokies (20-3, 11-2), who shoot 68% on free throws, made 19 of 20 in the Atlantic 10 victory over the Explorers (6-20, 3-10) at Philadelphia.

No. 14 Penn State 67, Michigan 57--Pete Lisicky scored 18 points at State College, Pa., to lead the Nittany Lions (19-4, 10-4), who had lost their previous two Big Ten games. The loss was the first for the Wolverines (16-10, 6-7) since four players and a recruit were involved in a car accident last Saturday.

No. 17 North Carolina 99, Virginia Military Institute 76--Antawn Jamison made 11 of 13 shots and scored 25 points to lead the Tar Heels (19-7) in a nonconference game at Chapel Hill, N.C. It was the 32nd consecutive time the Keydets (15-9) have lost to North Carolina and the 35th time in 39 meetings.

No. 19 Memphis 63, Tennessee Chattanooga 55--Lorenzen Wright had 14 points and 13 rebounds in a nonconference game at Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Tigers (19-5), who beat the Moccasins (13-11) despite hitting only 45% of their free throws.

No. 25 Wisconsin Green Bay 90, Illinois Chicago 56--Jeff Nordgaard scored 24 of his 37 points in the first half of a Midwestern Collegiate Conference game at Chicago to lead the Phoenix (23-2, 15-0) to its 21st consecutive victory. It was the Flames’ (8-17, 4-11) seventh consecutive loss.

OTHER GAMES

Maryland (14-9, 6-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) hung on at Raleigh, N.C., for an 86-84 victory over North Carolina State (14-12, 3-10), a loser of eight ACC games by a combined 24 points. . . . Chris Collins had a career-high seven three-point baskets and finished with 27 points at Tallahassee, Fla., where Duke (16-10, 7-7 ACC) won, 93-87, over Florida State (12-11, 4-9). . . . Southeastern Louisiana (15-10, 11-4 in the Trans America Athletic Conference) ended the College of Charleston’s 20-game winning streak, third longest in the nation, with a 93-83 victory over the Cougars (22-3, 14-1) at Hammond, La. . . . Rick Brainard scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as Portland (16-9, 7-6 West Coast Conference) was an 80-71 winner over Santa Clara (18-7, 9-4) at Portland. . . . Lorenzo Rollins made two free throws with four seconds to play in overtime to give Gonzaga (19-6, 10-3) an 83-82 victory over St. Mary’s in Spokane, Wash., and sole possession of first place in the WCC.
