49ers Run Winning Streak to Eight
Long Beach State relievers Iran Berrera and Ryan Brannan did not allow a hit over the final four innings to help the 49ers get their eighth consecutive victory by holding off Pepperdine, 3-2, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Pepperdine.
Berrera, a junior, pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the top of the sixth to preserve the lead. Brannan earned his fourth save, striking out four of the six batters he faced in his two innings.
Kevin Moore hit a two-run triple and scored a run in a three-run fourth inning for the visiting 49ers (10-5), ranked 20th by Baseball America. Winning pitcher Steve Hueston (1-1) gave up two hits and two earned runs in five innings.
After Long Beach took a 3-0 lead, Pepperdine (7-9) scored twice in the fifth on an RBI double by Mark Lopez and a sacrifice fly by David Rosato.
In nonconference men’s tennis:
UC Irvine 6, San Diego State 1--Marc Tardif at No. 1 singles and Cameran Lindee at No. 5 singles each improved their team-best records to 5-3 for UC Irvine (5-3), ranked 45th nationally.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
USC 9, Cal State Fullerton 0--Suzie Italiano and Ayisha Zaman both swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, for host USC (5-2), which did not lose a set. Fullerton is 3-4.
