Boeing Working on 2 New 747 Models: One would carry more passengers and the other would fly greater distances before having to refuel. Seattle-based Boeing Co. expects to deliver the first of the new models to airlines by the turn of the century, said Susan Davis of Boeing Commercial Airplane Group. The longer-range 747-500x, which would have about the same seating capacity as the 747-400, would be able to fly 8,500 miles without refueling--or nonstop between New York and Hong Kong. The larger-capacity 747-600x would seat 500 passengers. The cost of the program is estimated at $4 billion.
