Public Enemy’s Chuck D. is launching his own Sony-distributed label, Slam Jamz, which will release only singles and EPs rather than full albums. . . . A full, lengthy version of the Eddie Vedder-Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan collaboration “The Long Road” will be on an album featuring score music from “Dead Man Walking.” The album will also feature Khan vocals not heard in the film, sung over orchestrations by director Tim Robbins’ brother David. . . .

Pennsylvania neo-hippie band Rusted Root will start work on its second album in April with producer Bill Bottrell (whose credits include Michael Jackson and Sheryl Crow). The band is slated to be second billed with Blues Traveler on this summer’s H.O.R.D.E. tour. The album is due in September. . . .

Vernon Reid’s first solo album since the breakup of Living Colour is due in May, with actor Laurence Fishburne rapping on one track. . . . With Skinny Puppy kaput, leader Ogre is recording a new album with Mark Walk (who produced and co-wrote Ruby’s recent debut) under the duo name Welt.
