South Bay : City Allocation of $150,000 Helps Buoy Seaside Lagoon

The popular Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach will open in May after all.

The city considered closing the saltwater lagoon and four-acre park because it would cost $1.5 million to replace the damaged water pipes and chlorination system.

The pipes broke in September and were repaired, but more breakage could occur. The City Council voted Tuesday night to spend $150,000 to funnel chlorinated ocean water into the 1.2-acre city lagoon instead of repairing the pipes.

That was good news for John York, the lagoon’s manager. “We’re happy we’ll be open,” York said. “This is a great family-oriented place for people with kids to go.”

In May the council will decide whether to invest $1.5 million to replace the pipes that were damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The lagoon, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is used by about 50,000 to 70,000 people each summer.
