Student Performers Will Help the Poor

Wednesday’s lunch break for two Troy High School students was a bit unconventional. Diane Lin sang a melody from Mozart’s “Alleluja,” while Jessica Tan played a spirited piano solo, Chopin’s “Impromptu in A Flat Major.”

Diane, 17, and Jessica, 14, were rehearsing for tonight’s Fullerton Joint Union High School District Talent Show, where they will be among the 13 acts in the spotlight.

Singers, dancers, musicians and dramatic artists from all of the district’s seven high schools will perform.

“This is the first time we’re doing this, showcasing each of the schools’ talent in a nice environment without competition,” said Erin Hooks, 17, an officer for the districtwide Student Advisory Council, which organized the show.

The goal, Erin said, is to “bring students from all the schools. It is promoting district unity.”

The event will also raise money for local charities. The cost of admission is $3, or $2 plus a can of food.

Erin said the students hope to make the show an annual event featuring student performers from Buena Park, Fullerton Union, La Habra, La Vista, Sonora, Sunny Hills and Troy high schools.

David Test, an assistant principal at Troy who is helping coordinate the show, said the campuses held tryouts earlier this year to choose their talent representatives.

“There’s a lot of kids with talent in this district,” said Jessica, who has been playing piano and violin for a decade. “We’re excited about this show. And it’s nice that it’s for a good cause.”

The talent show begins at 7 p.m. at Plummer Auditorium, 201 E. Chapman Ave. The proceeds, both money and food, will be donated to a local charity that helps feed and clothe the poor.
