Slaying Suspect Pleads Not Guilty
An Oxnard man Friday pleaded not guilty to a charge of killing a 21-year-old stranger who was walking his dog the day after Christmas.
Joaquin “Jack” Ayala Jr., 20, is accused of shooting Josue Carrera when they exchanged words after a chance encounter on an Oxnard street Dec. 26.
Carrera was walking his dog about 8:30 p.m. and did not know Ayala, investigators said.
Ayala faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
