A woman in her 90s was found dead after a fire in her house, despite unsuccessful attempts by a neighbor and police officer to rescue her, police said.

Flames had engulfed at least two rooms of the house, which was located in the 10400 block of Columbus Avenue, when a Foothill Division LAPD patrol car arrived on the scene about 10 p.m. Thursday, police said.

About 15 firefighters arrived soon after and extinguished the blaze in 15 minutes, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The woman’s body was found in the kitchen after the flames were extinguished. She remained unidentified as of Friday night, according to the coroner’s office. The cause of death was also undetermined.

One neighborhood man and a police officer suffered minor cuts and scrapes, which were treated on the scene, after they attempted to rescue the trapped woman, police said.

Damage to the house and its contents was estimated at $20,000, fire officials said.
