LEGAL LIMOS: There’s apparently some squabbling in the D.A.’s office over a car used by two Menendez prosecutors. The Informant newsletter says Assistant D.A. Carol Najera picks up lead prosecutor Dave Conn at the train station in L.A. and drives him to the Van Nuys Courthouse. . . . But Conn, who takes the train from Orange County, says they share the car. “It’s not a chauffeur situation,” Conn said. “It’s typical of some of the personalities in my office to complain about petty nonsense.”

ON THE ROAD: We don’t know that they really want the answers to this, but the MTA wants commuters to send their “funniest, most romantic, most outrageous” car- and van-pooling experiences. It’s to note the upcoming completion of carpool lanes on the 134 Freeway. . . . A free trip plus $1,000 will go to the writer of the best story. Send to “Tales from the Fast Lane,” MTA Marketing, PO Box 194, L.A., 90053.

SCHOOLS OF HARD KNOCKS: Think you’ve got money problems? Consider the community colleges of Los Angeles. The nine campuses are looking at $6 million worth of red ink--the worst crisis in years (B1). . . . The numbers “are as bad as I’ve ever seen in the district,” says William Norlund, acting president of Mission College in Sylmar.

WORLDS APART: Teenagers from different schools are drawn together despite their friends’ objections on “Malibu Shores,” a new NBC drama about tough Valley kids transferred to a tony Malibu campus after an earthquake. . . . “It’s only 18 miles between them, but in reality they’re worlds apart,” muses a teen in tonight’s premiere.
