Beth Burton of Cal State Northridge raised her school record to 59 feet 4 inches in the 20-pound weight throw Friday to place eighth in the NCAA indoor track and field championships in Indianapolis.
Burton’s fourth school record in the last three weeks helped her become the first Matador to earn Division I All-American honors in indoor track since the school moved from the Division II level in 1990.
The junior from Downey Warren High entered the meet with the 14th-best mark in the 20-woman field, but moved up six spots by topping her previous best by nearly a foot and a half.
Her opening throw of 58-2 topped her previous school record of 58-0 1/4 and she unloaded her 59-4 in the third round.
