Mills’ Lung Collapses After Win

Cleveland High pitcher Jared Mills was hospitalized Friday with a collapsed lung, for the third time in two years.

“The exertion after going six innings on Thursday is probably what caused it,” said his father, Cleveland Coach Jim Mills.

Mills struck out six to lead the Cavaliers to a 3-0 victory over Canoga Park in a San Fernando tournament game.

Track and Field

Senior Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks High, Chaminade junior Liz Giltner and Palmdale sophomore Kadrina Coffee head the list of local entrants in the National Scholastic Indoor track and field championships in Roxbury, Mass., today and Sunday.

Mortensen will run in the mile, Giltner will compete in the heptathlon and Coffee in the 400 meters, 4 x 200 and sprint medley relays.

Wrestling

Juan Roman of Channel Islands High has been selected outstanding wrestler among lower weights by the Tri-County All-Star Wrestling Assn. Roman (39-2) was Marmonte League and Southern Section Division II champion at 112 pounds, but did not compete in the Southern Section Masters Meet because of torn ligaments in his left knee.

Soccer

Forwards Kendall Simmonds of Royal High and Sean Herrity of Simi Valley have been named co-offensive players of the year in the Marmonte League.
