Microsoft Wins $8-Million Judgment in Piracy Case: The software company said it was awarded $8.08 million from the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in its lawsuit against Taiwan-based Unitron Inc. The Redmond, Wash.-based company was also awarded $1.78 million in damages against Unitron’s chief executive, Cheng Hsuing Chen, and its subsidiary based in City of Industry, Unitron Computer USA Inc., the company said. Unitron, a computer maker and former Microsoft licensee, was accused of illegal manufacture and distribution of Microsoft’s operating system software. The copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit was filed in 1993. More than 125,000 copies of counterfeit software valued at about $7 million were seized from Unitron in 1993 by U.S. marshals and Microsoft investigators.
