No Deal
The Walt Disney Co.’s attempt to buy the Angels started with a phone call last May. How the negotiations began and came apart:
1995
* MAY 5: Disney President Michael Eisner calls Angel owner Jackie Autry to discuss buying a percentage of the team. Gene and Jackie Autry had been negotiating with former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth.
* MAY 18: Disney announces an agreement to buy 25% of the Angels with an option to buy the rest later.
* SEPT. 7: Anaheim reveals a plans to renovate Anaheim Stadium for baseball only.
1996
* JAN. 17: Unable to agree on deal that would have it pay 70% of stadium renovation costs, Disney announces a 60-day deadline for the city to accept its offer.
* JAN. 24: Disney and Anaheim officials hold their first meeting since the 60-day deadline to try to settle the renovation issue.
* JAN. 27: Major league baseball owners approve the Disney purchase of 25% of Angels.
* FEB. 29: Anaheim counters with an offer to pay 25% of the renovation costs.
* MARCH 4: The city agrees to pay $30 million of the stadium’s estimated $100-million cost to renovate.
* MARCH 8: Anaheim Mayor Tom Daly defends the agreement giving Disney virtually all stadium revenue and eliminating any chance of bringing football to Anaheim Stadium.
* MARCH 12: City officials and Disney representatives appear discouraged after long sessions to work out terms of an agreement.
* MARCH 13: Disney announces it pulls out of negotiations.
