Fullerton Beats BYU for Sixth Straight Victory

Steve Chatham’s pinch-hit single with two outs in the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie, giving top-ranked Cal State Fullerton its sixth consecutive victory, 3-0, over Brigham Young in a nonconference game Saturday at Titan Field.

Scott Hild pitched a perfect game into the sixth inning and completed seven strong innings, giving up two hits and striking out five. Hild turned the game over to Mark Chavez, who picked up the victory with two scoreless innings. Titan starting pitchers have given up only one run over a span of 23 innings in the three-game sweep of BYU.

After Chatham’s hit, Mike Lamb drove in two runs with a single to center field.

Mark Kotsay was two for four with a stolen base for the Titans (21-2), who are off to their best start in school history.

In Big West Conference softball:

CS Fullerton 4-2, Utah State 1-5--Brandi Isgar pitched a five-hitter as Cal State Fullerton split a doubleheader with Utah State. Isgar had six strikeouts. Traci Fischer and Senetha Thomas each homered for the Titans (19-8, 6-2).

Tammy Alcantar had four RBIs in the second game for Utah State (13-10, 5-5). Julie Williams homered to drive in Fullerton’s only two runs in the game.

In the Redlands softball tournament:

Concordia 8, Redlands 3--Concordia took a 6-0 lead after three innings and won the championship over the tournament hosts. Junior Geodi Sunabe was five for five with two RBIs and was named most valuable player in the tournament.

In the UC Santa Barbara softball invitational:

Long Beach State 3, Cal State San Luis Obispo 0--Amy Miner pitched a five-hit shutout for Long Beach State in a pool play game. Amanda Adams had two hits for the 49ers.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 5, Azusa Pacific 2--The Vanguards won four of six singles sets and two of the three doubles sets at Costa Mesa Tennis Club. Ryan Lewis and David Robbins won their singles sets then teamed for a 9-8 victory in doubles for SCC (5-2, 1-1).

At the Long Beach State Collegiate Classic Track and Field Meet:

Weber State sweeps event--The men’s and women’s teams of Weber State won the meet championship with scores of 136 and 137.5 respectively. Cornell’s women barely missed winning the title with 136 points.

In the men’s division, host Long Beach State (101 points) finished third with UC Irvine in fourth (95). Jaime Barragan won two events for the 49ers, the 100 meters (10.53) and the 200 (21.22).

Kirran Moss won the hammer throw (150-10) and the shotput (40-11) for the 49er women, who placed fourth with 77 points. The Anteater women finished second.
