Sour Experience

In response to Marjorie Robins’ “Isle de France” (Feb. 18), I feel compelled to write. Unlike Marjorie, I did not find the so called “saucy French disposition” so appealing. In fact, if I never set foot on Martinique soil for the rest of my life it would still be too soon. Having recently completed a Caribbean cruise (I actually returned home on Feb. 18), I encountered a delightful welcome on St. Maarten, courtesy of “Big J’s Taxi and Tour.” I found Antigua to be equally friendly. Martinique however, was an island whose people were rude and condescending. The local French-speaking populace was not only reluctant to serve English-speaking tourists but in one particular instance a bakery clerk refused to serve me. No doubt it would have helped to speak French. Living in Southern California, however, I have become accustomed to helping tourists when they cross my own path. If only the people of Martinique could be so helpful.
