IBM Picks General Manager for PC Unit: Samuel Palmisano is regarded as an up-and-coming star among International Business Machines Corp. executives and had been president of IBM’s Integrated Systems Solutions Corp., the company’s fastest-growing business unit. The post had been vacant while IBM overhauled its troubled personal computer business. Industry analysts said Palmisano has a reputation as a “Mr. Fix-it” at IBM, based on the rapid growth of the Integrated Systems Solutions business under his command and previous management roles in IBM’s Asia-Pacific region. Analysts said the business is unprofitable and has been a drag on earnings for much of this decade.
