Student Team Wins Knowledge Bowl

For the first time in 20 years, Adolfo Camarillo High School students took first place at the Knowledge Bowl, an academic competition organized by the American Assn. of University Women.

The Camarillo students edged out their counterparts from seven public high schools and one private school at the bowl’s Tuesday night finals at Santa Paula High School.

The competition brought together 88 students in what organizers say is an effort to “make academics fun.”

“It feels great,” said Camarillo English teacher Bob Riggs who coached his 10-student team to victory.

In a Jeopardy-style competition, his team competed head-to-head with each of the other schools in nearly 20 subjects as diverse as geography, math, fine arts and current affairs. The Camarillo team was undefeated.

“The competition gives an outlet, other than sports, to the well-rounded student,” said Charlotte Poe of the AAUW.

Buena High School students took second place in a tiebreaker against two-time defending champion Rio Mesa High School.

The Knowledge Bowl has been held yearly since the 1960s and is open to all public and private high schools in the county, Poe said. For more information call 386-4232.
