Southeast : Long Beach to Open Station for Bikers

Share

A commuter bike station, touted as the first of its kind in the nation, will open in Long Beach next Friday near the downtown train station.

Catering to biking commuters, the station will include enclosed, guarded parking, a bike repair shop and a clothes changing area. The $230,000 experiment is aimed at promoting biking to public transit users.

Although similar bike stations have been used in Europe and Japan, this is the first one in the United States. Commuters arriving in Long Beach by train can rent a bike for $1 and ride the rest of the way to work. Those commuting from home on a bicycle can store the two-wheeler at the center and hop on the train. Planners say that if the bike center is successful, others could be built along bus and rail lines throughout the county.
