Rally Planned by Foes of Landfill Initiative
Opponents of the Weldon Canyon landfill initiative plan to stage a rally in Ventura on Sunday that will feature several local and state leaders, organizers said.
Members of Ventura County Citizens Against Measure T will be joined at the rally by state Sen. Jack O’Connell (D-Carpinteria), Assemblyman Brooks Firestone (R-Santa Ynez) and county Supervisors Susan Lacey, Maggie Kildee and John Flynn.
The group will meet at 1 p.m. at Mission Park, 211 Main St., then march to the mouth of the Ventura River, organizers said.
Taconic Resources, a San Diego investment firm, is proposing to build a 551-acre landfill in an undeveloped canyon between Ventura and Ojai. The dump would replace the Bailard Landfill in Oxnard, scheduled to close this summer.
Opponents warn that Measure T would exempt Taconic from local rate and regulatory controls.
They also say western Ventura County does not need a new dump and argue there are other cheaper disposal alternatives.
