The Los Angeles consul general of the People’s Republic of China, Feng Shusen, will discuss tensions with Taiwan, U.S.-Chinese relations and reform and development on the mainland in a forum Monday at Cal State Northridge.
The speech will be topical, said Justine Su, director of CSUN’s China Institute, “especially right now, with the tensions in the Taiwan Strait and with the tension between China and the U.S.”
China has recently come under intense international scrutiny for staging war games and testing missiles in the Taiwan Strait as Taiwan holds its first democratic election today.
Because CSUN has active associations for students of Taiwanese and Chinese descent, Su predicted a lively discussion.
“I’m sure the Taiwanese students will ask provocative questions about Taiwan,” she said.
“And I’m sure the consul general will be well-prepared to answer them.”
Feng is expected to deliver a 30-minute speech and then field audience questions. His appearance is sponsored by the China Institute, an academic and cultural exchange program among CSUN and 17 Chinese institutions of higher education, Su said.
The speech will begin at 2 p.m. in the Thousand Oaks Room of the University Student Union, 18111 Nordhoff St.
