The Audubon Society’s 4,000-acre wildlife sanctuary at Starr Ranch will open to the public April 21, officials announced Monday.

The private wilderness preserve was opened to the public last year for the first time, officials said, and the limited reservations were quickly filled.

“The response was overwhelming,” Audubon spokesman Ken Fortune said. “People were really up for this event. We get constantly asked about doing it again.”

Fortune said that 500 people will be allowed into the preserve. Guided trail walks will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drinks will be sold, and visitors may bring picnic lunches.

The sanctuary, between the Saddleback Mountains and Rancho Santa Margarita, is a wilderness laboratory, Fortune said. “It’s a research site where people study everything from the gnatcatcher and raptors to the calming effects of wilderness on urban stress.”
