Another all-sports radio station in Los Angeles has failed, with KMAX-FM (107.1) changing to a rock-’n’-roll format at midnight Monday.

Employees were told Monday at a 3 p.m. meeting in San Monica about the change and that they were out of work. The station employed about 25 people.

Odyssey Communications of Hawthorne, N.Y., reached an agreement to purchase KMAX and its sister Korean-language station, KWIZ, in January from Douglas Broadcasting of Atlanta for what is believed to be about $2 million. Escrow on that deal is expected to close within 30 days.

The station has had trouble generating business since word of the sale got out.

In the most recent Arbitron ratings book, KMAX failed to register a blip.

KMAX was the flagship station for the Ice Dogs of the International Hockey League, and a team spokeswoman said Monday night there is no contingency plan.

KMPC dropped its all-sports format in April of 1994, and KMAX started doing sports talk in February of last year with a Joe McDonnell-Doug Krikorian afternoon show.
