Tickets for the Newport Beach International Film Festival screenings can be purchased at theaters; $6 general admission, $5 for seniors and children under 12, unless otherwise indicated:

Edwards Island

* 2 p.m.: “The War Between Us,” directed by Anne Wheeler (Canada, 1995). The friendship of two women, one Canadian and one Japanese, endures during World War II despite the prejudice surrounding them.

* 4: “A Modern Affair” (also known as “247”), directed by Vern Oakley (U.S., 1996). A young, successful woman hears her biological clock ticking and enlists a sperm bank to fulfill her wish of parenthood. With the short film “Tattoo Teardrop,” directed by Michael Wilson (U.S.). Set in present-day Los Angeles, a look at the never-ending cycle of street gang violence.

* 6: “Cityscrapes,” directed by Michael Becker (U.S., 1995). Ten intertwined stories about 18 young Angelenos. With the short film “Dangerous Toys,” directed by Greg Voevodsky (U.S.). Follow Jack the Ripper through the dark alleys of London as he runs from both justice and himself.

* 8: “This Is Spinal Tap,” directed by Rob Reiner (U.S., 1984). Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer star in a “Five Decades of Comedy” offering.

* 10: “Le Magique” (The Magic), directed by Azdine Melliti Fazai (Tunisia, 1994). The ruminations of an imaginative young man whose love of pop culture drives him to film a “Spartacus” of his own.

* 2 p.m.: “Frank and Ollie,” directed by Theodore Thomas (U.S., 1994). Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson were two of the “Nine Old Men” employed as animators by Walt Disney during his most prolific period. This documentary, by Frank Thomas’ son, captures the friendship and camaraderie shared by these men for more than 40 years.

* 4: “Car Crash,” directed by David Caesar (Australia, 1995). A lighthearted commentary that takes a darker turn.

* 7: “Dreamrider,” directed by Bill Brown (U.S., 1994). James Earl Jones stars a man who inspires an amputee to reclaim his life by bicycling from Fullerton to Maine.

* 10: “Toast With the Gods,” directed by E. Magun (U.S., 1995). An update of Homer’s “The Odyssey” set in modern-day Seattle. A drug dealer and stripper try to escape their unhappy surroundings.

* 4:30 p.m.: “1000 Boomerangs,” directed by Mariano Galperin (Argentina, 1993). Eight young people of various nationalities share 48 hours in Argentina and learn about the customs that surround them.

* 6:30: “That Eye, the Sky,” directed by John Ruane (Australia, 1993). A mysterious stranger helps a family survive the father’s near-fatal accident.

* 8:30: “1000 Boomerangs.”
