Beilenson Asks FEMA to Extend Program
Citing the Southern California homeowners still struggling with earthquake damage two years after the Northridge temblor, Rep. Anthony C. Beilenson (D-Woodland Hills) is calling on the federal government to once again extend a disaster-relief program.
In a letter sent this week to James Lee Witt, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the congressman is asking that the housing assistance program for quake victims be extended past its April 17 deadline.
The program provides rental aid to people displaced from their homes during quake repairs. “Although the number of affected homeowners has decreased significantly,” Beilenson wrote, “it is still financially devastating to those who continue to face the burden of mortgage payments, rent and other monthly expenses associated with dual households.”
Earlier this year, the deadline was extended from Jan. 17--the quake’s second anniversary--to April 17 after an appeal by the congressman.
