State Group Honors City Utilities Programs

Two city programs that help conserve water and electricity at schools and residential developments have been lauded by the California Municipal Utilities Assn.

The awards were presented at the statewide association’s 64th annual conference in San Diego.

The group recognized Anaheim’s Public Utilities Department for its School Menu for Water and Energy Efficiency program and its Developing Responsible Irrigation Practices (DRIP) program.

Through the “Menu” program, started in 1994, Anaheim offers public and private schools free ultra-low-flush toilet and urinal retrofits, water and energy usage surveys, and rebates for upgrading to more efficient lighting and air conditioning systems.

The DRIP program, also started in 1994, provides homeowner associations with free assistance in improving irrigation systems. The help includes a cost-savings analysis and landscaping advice.

Julie Bendzick-Sin, a spokeswoman for the city Public Utilities Department, said that the programs are indicative of Anaheim’s aggressive approach to resource efficiency.

“It’s a win-win,” she said, “because not only are [utility customers] lowering their usage, they are lowering their electricity and water bills.”
