2 Events to Spotlight Families, Education

Share

Two family- and education-oriented events are coming up Saturday.

The first, at Mission College, is a career day with a twist: The entire family can get advice on planning for a college education from administrators, teachers and counselors.

The free event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., is sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Unity Coalition and the Pacoima Village College and Career Project. The career fair will feature workshops for parents wishing to learn about financial planning, home learning environments, adult reentry into school and the current job market.

Students in kindergarten through sixth grade can participate in art and drama activities. Child care will be provided for children 2 to 4. All workshops will be offered in English and Spanish, organizers said.

The festivities include entertainment, door prizes, breakfast and lunch.

Transportation to Mission College from schools in the San Fernando schools cluster or the Sylmar/Verdugo Hills cluster can be arranged, organizers said.

Also on Saturday, the Los Angeles Unified School District will sponsor a parent and community conference titled “Family Involvement Equals Student Success” in Granada Hills.

More than 30 agencies and community group representatives have been invited to participate, allowing parents to attend workshops and tap into resources beyond the school system, organizers said.

Parents of students from the Canoga Park/El Camino/Taft schools cluster, the Chatsworth/Granada Hills cluster and the Kennedy/Monroe cluster are hosting the conference, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Patrick Henry Middle School, 17340 San Jose St.
