Three streets will be renamed as part of a plan that won final City Council approval this week.

The plan, part of the Santa Ana Freeway widening project, is designed to help tourists exiting the Santa Ana Freeway find Disneyland more easily.

The changes:

* Anaheim Boulevard will become Anaheim Way from south of Cerritos Avenue to State College Boulevard, beginning in November 1997.

* Freedman Way, which runs between Harbor and Anaheim boulevards, will become Disney Way, starting in February 1998.

* West Street will become Disneyland Drive from the Santa Ana Freeway south to Katella Avenue, starting in December 1999.

There will likely continue to be a Freedman Way, however. City officials said they hope to rename another street in honor of the late philanthropist and developer Leo Freedman. Possibilities are Manchester Avenue near Disneyland, and Clementine Street.

“We’re very happy with this resolution,” Sharon Lesk, a Freedman Foundation trustee, told council members. Lesk noted that Clementine and Manchester both run through an area that was developed by Freedman.

Freedman, who bought citrus orchards and strawberry fields adjacent to property where Disneyland was eventually built, owned the Anaheim Plaza Resort, the Grand Hotel, Melodyland and the Celebrity Theater.

Freedman’s philanthropic foundation, established after his death in 1989, supports cultural programs and senior citizen activities.
