South Bay : Redondo Beach Challenges Rate Increase by Cable TV Firm

Share

Redondo Beach officials are fighting with a local cable provider over plans to raise rates by 25% next month.

Starting May 1, Century Cable intends to charge residents an additional $5.23 per month for basic cable. Currently, residents pay $20.57 per month. The increase will raise the bill to $25.80.

Under new Federal Communications Commission guidelines, cable companies can raise their rates if they add channels. Century Cable has added eight stations, including CSPAN 2, the Learning Channel and FX, said Maggie Tephany, a city administrative analyst.

Despite the additions, Tephany said, the company has not justified the sizable rate increase and further documentation has been requested.

“We feel we need to do everything we can so that everyone who wants it can afford basic cable,” Tephany said.

Century Cable could not be reached for comment.
