Cincinnati Red second baseman Bret Boone went on the disabled list Monday and will need arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow.

The Reds called up Eric Owens from triple-A Indianapolis to fill his spot.

Boone will have surgery in the next day or so and will be out three to six weeks. He injured his throwing elbow while taking batting practice a week ago, and X-rays found bone chips.

The move left the Reds with six players on the disabled list before the first pitch on opening day: pitchers Jose Rijo (elbow surgery), Chuck McElroy (pulled hamstring) and Jeff Brantley (foot surgery), outfielders Thomas Howard (broken wrist) and Eric Anthony (separated shoulder) and Boone.

The Reds also lost backup catcher Damon Berryhill to reconstructive elbow surgery during spring training. He was released.

In addition, the Reds are concerned about shortstop Barry Larkin. One of his children has chickenpox, and Larkin doesn’t know whether he had the disease as a child and is therefore not liable to catch it again.

The St. Louis Cardinals put starting outfielder Brian Jordan on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday because of a broken left thumb and partially torn thumb ligament, the team said.

Jordan, 29, batted .296 with career highs in home runs (22), runs batted in (81) and stolen bases (24) in 131 games for the Cardinals last season.

He was hurt trying to make a catch in Saturday’s game.

Outfielder Terry Bradshaw was called up from triple-A Louisville to replace Jordan.

Houston pitcher John Hudek, who had a rib on his right side removed last season, has a fracture of the top rib on his left side, X-rays revealed Monday.

On Sunday, the Astros put Hudek on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 22 because of a torn muscle on the left side of his chest.

No surgery will be required, but Hudek’s recovery will be pushed back one week and he can begin light throwing next week.

Hudek had the top rib on his right side removed last July 18 because it was causing a vein in his right arm to constrict. He was working back into shape at spring training when the chest injury occurred.

The Baltimore Orioles added right-handed pitcher Jimmy Myers to the 25-man roster. Myers, 26, was 0-0 with a 2.00 ERA in nine appearances for Baltimore this spring as a non-roster invitee.
