Redondo Beach to Retain Oversight of Animal Control

Share

The cost of taking care of your doggy in Redondo Beach just went up.

The City Council voted Tuesday night to double dog license fees, but decided not to turn the city’s animal control services over to the SPCA in Hawthorne.

Contracting with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals would have saved the city $37,000 a year. Increased dog license fees will generate $21,000.

Licenses for spayed and neutered dogs went from $10 to $20 and for other dogs from $20 to $40.

The city received 206 postcards and a petition with more than 400 signatures opposing the transfer of animal control services to the SPCA, city auditor Crystal Alexander said.

Residents felt that it was more convenient to pick up their lost dogs at the city’s north Redondo Beach facility rather than driving to Hawthorne.
