Philadelphia first baseman Gregg Jefferies tore a ligament in his left thumb in a game against the Colorado Rockies and will be sidelined for at least two months.

Jefferies was injured when he dived into third base following an RBI triple in the first inning, his first hit of the season. He left the game and was replaced by Kevin Jordan.

Jefferies will join pitchers Curt Schilling, Tyler Green, Bobby Munoz and David West, infielder Mike Benjamin and outfielder Tony Longmire on the Phillies’ disabled list.

The Montreal Expos put pitcher Carlos Perez on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his left shoulder and activated pitcher Jose Paniagua. Paniagua, 22, started against the Cincinnati Reds for his major-league debut Thursday.

The New York Yankees signed free-agent outfielder Dion James and sent outfielder Matt Luke to triple-A Columbus. James, 33, who hit .287 in 85 games with the Yankees, had been released by Montreal after signing a minor-league contract.

The Yankees added him because of uncertainty over the health of Ruben Sierra, who strained a hamstring Wednesday against Cleveland.
