Todd Martin beat Petr Korda, 6-2, 6-4, 7-5, but MaliVai Washington lost, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, to Daniel Vacek as the defending Davis Cup champion United States team split the opening singles matches with the Czech Republic in Prague. Patrick McEnroe and Patrick Galbraith are set to go against the Czechs’ Jiri Novak and Martin Damm in doubles play today. Reverse singles play is Sunday.

In other World Group matches, France leads Germany, 2-0; Sweden leads India, 2-0, and Italy and South Africa are tied, 1-1.

Two-time defending champion Conchita Martinez beat Petra Begerow, 6-2, 6-0, and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario eliminated Sabine Hack, 6-2, 6-2, in quarterfinal matches in the Family Circle Cup tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The Ivy League will audit its member schools to find out whether any are violating its policy against giving athletic scholarships. But league officials said they did not believe there was a problem and they were doing their first audit since settling a federal price-fixing suit in 1991 simply to prove that schools had been obeying league policy.

Basketball

Oklahoma Coach Kelvin Sampson said he will stay with the Sooners, ending speculation that he would take a job coaching at North Carolina State. Oklahoma is ready to extend Sampson’s contract, which pays him a reported $400,000 a year, for as long as 10 more seasons, university President David Boren said.

There is no evidence that the late Boston Celtic captain Reggie Lewis used illegal drugs while he played on the 1986-1987 Northeastern University basketball team, an investigating commission reported.

The commission, established by Northeastern President John Curry, found that other members of that team used marijuana and cocaine.

Lewis died July 27, 1993, after he collapsed while shooting baskets. Two doctors said scarring found on his heart appeared consistent with cocaine use, although an autopsy and subsequent review concluded an irregular heartbeat caused his death.

Louisville center Samaki Walker, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, says he is finished with college basketball and has declared for the NBA draft.
