Cal Lutheran to Hold Latino Culture Week

Paintings, poems, dancers and a 20-piece Latin orchestra will be featured at Cal Lutheran University during a weeklong celebration of Latino culture that begins Monday.

An exhibit of Mexican artist Maria Velasco’s paintings will launch the Festival de Encuentros. The work of other local artists will also be on display all week at the school’s Pearson Library. On Tuesday, the film “Mi Familia” will be shown in the Student Union Building at 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Rev. Michael Gutierrez of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Los Angeles will hold a special weekend service in the school’s chapel at 10:10 a.m. A poetry reading will follow in the Student Union from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A dance group, Danza Azteca, will perform in the Pavilion from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Friday will feature flamenco and folklorico dancers at an afternoon picnic at Kingsmen Park. In the evening, a Sabor Latino dinner concert will take place at 8 p.m. in the auditorium.

Tickets to the concert, which includes a Mexican food buffet, cost $10. All other events are free and open to the public. For information, call 493-3839.
