Hole of the Day

NO. 10, PAR FOUR, PLAYED AT 485 YARDS SUNDAY

There was no hole like No. 10 on the last day at Augusta National. At 485 yards, it’s the longest par-four in the majors. Most of it is downhill, which helps, and it’s where Greg Norman’s downfall reached the point of no return. The hole was the third-most-difficult Sunday, behind No. 5 and No. 4, averaging an aggregate stroke average of 4.273. Larry Mize, Brad Faxon and David Duval were the only ones who birdied the hole. There were 28 who made par, including Nick Faldo. Norman bogeyed the hole, the last of 11 who did so. There were two triple bogeys. But Norman’s bogey hurt the most, narrowing his lead to a single shot. It was gone the next hole and so were his chances of winning, even if he didn’t know it at the time.
