A number of free programs are being planned at a one-stop resource center opened recently by the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation.

The first course provided by the Family Service and Resource Center, 502 S. Ross St., is a class on Monday and Wednesday nights for those who speak English as a second language, project director Tim Morales said.

“The word hasn’t gotten out quite yet that we’re here,” Morales said. The center, open for about a month, is distributing fliers at schools, churches and supermarkets.

As more people sign up for programs, Morales said, the center hopes to serve as many as 75 people a day with seven staff members. Other services the center hopes to offer are family planning and tutoring.

Morales said the center is open to Orange County residents of any ethnicity.

The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation, based in Montebello, has budgeted $50,000 to begin operations at the center and eventually hopes to fund it with private and public grant money, said Kathryn Tafoya, MAOF’s executive director.

MAOF, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educational and job opportunities for Mexican Americans, operates a similar center in Montebello and has child-care centers across the state. Information: (714) 835-4199.
