Calling it a potentially life-saving project, City Council members have approved a $1,500 donation to help La Habra High School put on an elaborate all-night graduation party June 13.

School officials said that traditionally, nearly all of the school’s graduates attend the event, which takes place after commencement exercises.

Grad night festivities at schools across the nation are offered as an alternative to private parties at which alcoholic beverages may be available, turning a joyous occasion into a potentially dangerous one if intoxicated teenagers drive to or from parties.

La Habra’s celebration will prohibit alcohol. Once students enter the high school’s gym, they will not be not allowed to leave until the next morning. Parents said the theme of this year’s grad night festivities will be “Space Odyssey.”

Parent volunteers are producing the $26,000 event, which they said has been a success in the past.

“Unbelievable is not a big-enough word for what happens at grad night,” Mayor Steven C. Anderson said. “This is a spectacular event.”

The public will get a sneak preview of the decorations at the gym from 1 to 3:30 p.m. the day of the party.

Council members also approved $500 for the graduation party at Sonora High School and said they limited the amount because that celebration is not held on campus.
