A light earthquake hit near Salinas on Thursday, jangling nerves on the 90th anniversary of San Francisco’s devastating 1906 quake.

The quake, measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale, was on the San Andreas Fault, the same fault that produced the great San Francisco quake, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Residents of several towns said they felt a sharp jolt, but there were no reports of injuries or damage.

The quake was centered close to San Juan Bautista, 80 miles south of San Francisco, said Lu Page, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey.

USGS officials said the quake occurred on a very active part of the San Andreas Fault where small quakes are common.

A woman in the small town of Aromas, about 15 miles north of Salinas, called San Francisco radio station KCBS to say that her house rocked for about 10 seconds.

“Things were swinging for quite a while afterwards. We stood under the doorway,” the caller said, adding that her house suffered no damage.

The quake was felt as San Franciscans were commemorating the 90th anniversary of the 1906 quake, which killed hundreds of people and sparked a fire that destroyed vast areas of the city, leaving thousands homeless.
