Hey, Don’t Forget That Faldo Won It

Share

Greg Norman had a bad day, but Nick Faldo’s back nine at the Masters on Sunday was by no means “pressureless,” as Jim Murray [April 18] said, it was flawless. He did everything he needed to do to win. It should be noted that notwithstanding what happened to Norman, Faldo’s winning margin over the rest of the field was six shots.

Greg Norman’s collapse in the Masters may or may not prove that he can’t handle pressure, but it definitely reveals something of the man’s character. The class and grace that he showed on the 18th green after the most bitter disappointment of his career were a stark contrast to the boorish behavior that we’ve come to expect from so many egocentric zillionaire jocks who would have blamed Faldo, the weather, or punched out their caddie. Norman proved at Augusta that you can finish second and still be a champion.
