Re “Judge Awards Custody of Girl, 8, to Man With No Blood Ties to Her,” April 12: Judge Martha Goldin should be congratulated for again making the decision to put the welfare of a child ahead of the sexuality of the legal guardian. Hopefully this decision will help to guide future cases in dispelling the myth that gay men and women are unfit to parent.

* In my opinion, the appeals court erred in the Thomas custody case by not deciding the issue directly, instead finding a technical error and remanding the case back to Superior Court.

But once the case returned to Superior Court, then that court erred in continuing Goldin on the case. Here is a woman who threw Catherine Thomas in jail, placed her under a court order to stay away, then ruled against her for not having contact. Catch-22? No. Standard practice at the courthouse. A new judge would have had less bias.
