MUSLIM HOLIDAY

Share

Southern California Muslims will join followers of Islam around the world Sunday in Eid al-Adha prayers to commemorate the hajj, or pilgrimage, to Mecca in modern-day Saudi Arabia. Able-bodied Muslims are required by their faith to make the pilgrimage to the holy sites at least once in their lives. The rituals observed in Mecca revolve around the trials and sacrifices of the patriarch Abraham and Ishmael, his son by Hagar.

Community Eid al-Adha prayers will be said Sunday morning at several sites.

* As many as 7,000 worshipers are expected by the Orange County Islamic Society at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley at 8 a.m. (714) 839-2929.

* Eid prayers organized by the Islamic Center of Southern California will also be conducted at 8 a.m. on USC’s track and field facility, Cromwell Field. (213) 382-9200.
